Wedding Photo of Hazel Oakes and Sherman Stewart

L-R. Marjorie Oakes, Hazel Oakes Stewart, Sherman Stewart, and Frederic Oakes
This is the wedding photograph of my parents, Sherman Mason Stewart and Hazel Gertrude Oakes, taken on November 30, 1939 following their wedding, at her parent's home on Jockey Street in Galway, Saratoga, New York.  Their best man was Frederic Richmond Oakes and the maid of honor was Marjorie Oakes, both were siblings of the bride. Hazel and Sherman were married on Thanksgiving Day.  It was the custom in Hazel's family to marry on holidays. Her parents were married on Christmas Day 1916. In New York State, in 1940, Thanksgiving was moved to the fourth Thursday in November. Their anniversary never fell on Thanksgiving Day.

Notes:
1. Uncle Freddie told me in 1965 that his name was actually spelled "Frederic".
2. Does anybody know the make and model of the car parked on the road? I'm not sure who's car it is. Possibilities are Sherman Stewart, Edward Oakes, or Uncle Freddie.

  1. Great first post, Peg! I loved that you didn't crop the photo. I like seeing the background and old car. Looking forward to seeing more.

  3. I started my blog about a year and a half ago with a photo of my parents, too. I guess that's the starting place for all of family history, isn't it? I'm sorry I can't help with identifying the car.... Welcome to geneabloggers.

  4. We once lived on a Jockey St when I was little (in So California). It was funny - because we pronounced it Yockey St.
    Welcome to the Geneabloggers family.
    Regards,
